In December 2016, the meeting of the Supervisory Board of the Agency for Strategic Initiatives approved the strategic initiative “Developing Volunteerism in the Regions”.
At the same time, the President of the Russian Federation V.V. Putin instructed the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation to prepare a roadmap for developing volunteerism, in collaboration with the Agency for Strategic Initiatives.
Volunteerism covers various areas of people’s activities – from targeted assistance to vulnerable groups (social volunteerism) to environmental protection (environmental volunteerism) and attracts people regardless of their gender and age. Considering the contribution of volunteers to the socio-economic development of the territories, the UN General Assembly recommended raising public awareness of the value and opportunities of volunteerism and promoting favorable conditions for participation in voluntary activities.
In 2014, in the United States, about 63 million Americans became volunteers, having worked 7.9 billion hours; the monetary equivalent of the volunteer labor exceeded $ 184 billion. The economic potential of volunteer activities in Canada exceeded, in terms of values, the agricultural industry and automotive engineering.
The Agency for Strategic Initiatives has developed the Standard of Volunteer Support in the regions. The standard is based on the best practices of governmental support to volunteerism in Russia and abroad.
